Archie Manning is one of the most notable fixtures around the SEC.

Not only did he play football and baseball at Ole Miss, his sons Peyton and Eli were star quarterbacks for Tennessee and the Rebels, respectively. He’s also a prominent member of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Committee, which has longed maintained SEC ties.

Fittingly, the league plans to recognize Manning with one of its highest honors this season.

Manning is this year’s recipient of the Michael L. Slive Distinguished Service Award, as announced in an SEC press release Thursday. The legendary Ole Miss quarterback will receive the award during the SEC Legends Dinner on Nov. 30 and will also be honored the following day before the SEC championship game.

“Archie Manning is more than a football legend in the Southeastern Conference,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in the press release. “His integrity, leadership and contributions to society make him a pillar of a wider community that transcends sport.

“Archie has left an indelible mark on the SEC through his participation in athletics, his service organization leadership and his dedication to family values. We are pleased to honor Archie Manning with the Michael L. Slive Distinguished Service Award.”

According to the press release, the award “is presented on special occasions to former student-athletes, coaches, graduates or administrators of SEC institutions or the conference office who have maintained a lifetime of interest in college athletics and who, over a significant period of time, have exhibited superior leadership qualities and made a significant impact to the betterment of the mission of the Southeastern Conference.”

The honor is named after former SEC commissioner Mike Slive, who held his position from 2002-14 and was the first recipient of the award upon his retirement.

Last year was the only other time the award was presented — it was given to four former Kentucky football players and a pair of former Vanderbilt basketball players who helped shatter the SEC color barrier in their respective sports.
