Texas A&M fans hoping Trey Williams’ spectacular Liberty Bowl portends well for 2015 are starting the new year disappointed.

In a major surprise, the 5-foot-8 running back and kick returner will declare for the NFL draft rather than return for his senior season.

Williams averaged 6.9 yards per carry in pretty limited action at running back, adding 16 catches and returning 17 kickoffs. He produced 86 rushing yards, 46 receiving yards and two offensive touchdowns in the 45-37 win against West Virginia on Monday.

His best chance to latch onto a 53-man roster should be as a kick returner and maybe even as a kick coverage guy. Williams’ speed is his best asset. He averaged 24.1 yards per kickoff return in three seasons at College Station. Williams ranked sixth in the SEC this season in kickoff return average. He also may have some value due to his offensive versatility as a pass-catcher.

Tra Carson and Brandon Williams will be seniors next year. The two combined for 960 rushing yards on 4.5 yards per carry in 2014 and should give A&M plenty of experience at running back next season.
