Two weeks is a small sample size, but some of what we’ve seen in the SEC has been astounding. And not always in a good way.

Here are 10 numbers, in particular, that jumped out at me after the first 2 weeks.

31.86

That’s John Metchie III’s average yards per catch.

Your next question might be: Who is John Metchie III?

He was “Alabama WR V” last season. Thanks to early departures to the NFL, he’s moved up the depth chart and made an immediate impact.

159.5

That’s Elijah Moore’s average receiving yards per game.

Moore leads the nation in that stat — and 227 of his 319 yards came against Florida. Moore had 850 yards last season even though Ole Miss switched QBs and styles early in the season.

The best part about Moore’s hot start? He caught the tying TD in OT against Kentucky and didn’t celebrate, which meant a routine PAT for his kicker, who won it.

471.0

That’s how many yards per game Florida’s defense is allowing.

Last year, the Gators allowed 324 yards per game against SEC teams.

Kyle Trask and the offense have overcome the defensive lapses and breakdowns, but that’s an absurd number for a program that surrendered more than 350 yards per SEC game just 3 times in the past 11 seasons.

1

That’s how many plays covering 30+ yards Arkansas has allowed. The Hogs haven’t allowed any play covering 40 or more yards. They lead the SEC in both stats. Last year, Arkansas allowed the most 30+ yard plays in the SEC (33, in fewer games than just about everybody, too), the 3rd-most plays covering 40+ yards (17) and 2nd-most at 50+ yards (10).

Is it too early to suggest Barry Odom deserves a raise?

Bonus: 1 also is how many touchdowns Georgia has allowed in 2 games.

That’s probably a bit more believable, though. The Dawgs led all Power 5 programs in fewest TDs allowed last season with 20.

10

That’s how many TD passes Kyle Trask has thrown. Trask leads the SEC and is tied for 2nd nationally. His 5.0 TDs per game average tops the country.

When was the last time a Gators QB led the SEC in TD passes? Tim Tebow, with 30 in 2008.

5

That’s how many interceptions KJ Costello has thrown. That already matches the total that Garrett Schrader and Tommy Stevens each threw last season.

3

That’s how many times Florida has punted through 2 games. That’s tied for the fewest in the country.

Heck, Auburn QB Bo Nix has 2 punts.

65.00

That’s Auburn’s average rushing yards per game.

We’re a long way from 2016, when the Tigers led the SEC at 271.3 yards per game.

Dating to last year’s bowl loss to Minnesota, Auburn has failed to gain 100 yards rushing in 3 consecutive games. That’s a team total, by the way. That hadn’t happened since a 3-game stretch in early 2018.

If you’re wondering when the last time Auburn has gone 4 consecutive games without rushing for 100 yards? Well, it hasn’t happened this century.

1-1

That’s Sam Pittman’s career record as an SEC head coach.

That also was Nick Saban’s record after his first 2 games as an SEC coach. Saban actually started 1-2 at LSU in 2000. Good thing Twitter wasn’t around then; fools would have called for his head. It worked out OK.

100%

That’s Will Reichard’s percentage on field-goal attempts (2-for-2) and extra-point attempts (12-for-12).

If you don’t think that’s astounding, you didn’t pay much attention to Alabama’s kickers the past decade.
