Las Vegas sports books are getting into football mode, as seen by the recent releases of betting lines for marquee matchups and regular-season win totals. But what do the bettors themselves think?

ESPN reporter David Purdum recently tweeted the five most popular bets at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook to win college football’s national championship. The teams are:

  1. Michigan
  2. Ohio State
  3. LSU
  4. Clemson
  5. Alabama

One takeaway from all this, is that in preseason, there are varying opinions among handicappers and fans. Golden Nugget, another Las Vegas sports book, recently set the over/under for regular-season win totals for Michigan (9.5), Ohio State (8.5) and LSU (9.5) all below Clemson (10). Alabama’s over/under was set at 9.5 games. Tennessee, the only SEC team to have the over/under set at 10 wins by Golden Nugget, is noticeably not a top-five bet at the Superbook.

Purdum also tweeted the current national championship odds at William Hill sports books. Another set of odds that don’t quite sync up with the Golden Nugget win totals.

Perhaps once these teams actually play a few games the handicappers will start to form a consensus.

Would you bet on any of the teams discussed to win the national championship?
