Alabama and coach Nick Saban have secured the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for five consecutive years, according to the 247Sports composite team rankings.

That feat may be even more impressive than Saban’s three national championships with the Tide.

It’s no shock that Alabama is in contention to win yet another mythical recruiting title, but this year will be more of a struggle for Bama. The team has yet to secure a single commitment from a five-star player after grabbing six last year, and if the men in Crimson fail to win the SEC West, public sentiment that the program is on the decline will grow well before National Signing Day in February.

Alabama will not go easy. The team’s recruiting class has added a half-dozen four-star players in June and July.

But it sure seems like we’re headed toward one of the most competitive national recruiting rankings in years, for whatever that’s worth.

Here are the five teams that have a chance to take down Bama.

LSU TIGERS

The current LSU class closely resembles the one Alabama signed in 2015: a touted quarterback (Feleipe Franks vs. Blake Barnett), loads of star defensive backs (Saivion Smith/Eric Monroe vs. Kendall Sheffield/Minkah Fitzpatrick), a five-star defensive tackle (Edwin Alexander vs. Daron Payne) and a pair of exciting wideouts (Dee Anderson/Stephen Sullivan vs. Calvin Ridley/Daylon Charlot).

The Tigers still are very much in play for several high-profile defensive linemen and defensive backs. If LSU gets just a few more four- and especially five-star players, the team could edge out Alabama for at least the SEC lead, if not the recruiting national title.

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Coach Urban Meyer has a ton of momentum after last year’s national championship, and currently claims the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class. He’s got motivation to stay ahead of James Franklin (Penn State) and especially Jim Harbaugh (Michigan). And there’s the whole satellite camp element.

Ohio State is the hottest program in the country right now. The Buckeyes already have claimed the No. 1 strongside defensive end (Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa’s brother), the No. 1 running back, the No. 2 all-purpose back and the No. 3 tight end, strongside defensive end and dual-threat quarterback. Another Big Ten or national title and Meyer should only get more top-end talent.

FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES

Jimbo Fisher has done an excellent job of ensuring FSU remains a national force after Jameis Winston left, mainly through stockpiling better talent than anyone in the ACC. (You know things are going well when you are contending for the No. 1 recruiting class despite using two scholarships on placekickers.)

FSU’s top-end commitments are as good as any team’s. The Seminoles have claimed the nation’s No. 1 cornerback, No. 1 tight end, No. 1 center and No. 1 JUCO outside linebacker. That’s not to mention the No. 2 weakside defensive end and No. 3 pro-style quarterback.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS

Losing one-time commitment and four-star running back B.J. Emmons to Alabama doesn’t help the Bulldogs in the team’s quest to dethrone the Tide. UGA trails Bama by four commitments (18 to 14) and ranks No. 10 in the country according to the 247Sports composite.

But quarterback Jacob Eason may be the best of a very good class of passers. The team remains the favorite for defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who would give UGA two of the 10 highest-rated players in the country. And Georgia already holds a commitment from five-star defensive tackle Julian Rochester.

An SEC East title, or more, in 2015 could help Georgia close on several top-end in-state prospects still considering the Bulldogs, and that would give the program a chance to surpass Alabama in the recruiting rankings.

USC TROJANS

Only Ohio State has more than USC’s 12 four- and five-star commitments. (The Trojans are tied with FSU and LSU for second.) Now that Marcus Mariota has departed from Oregon, many believe USC can overtake the Ducks as the best Pac-12 team in 2015. That could launch an already-outstanding recent recruiting effort into best-in-the-nation status.

USC, by the way, did knock off Bama during the 2015 recruiting cycle according to a few sites, including Rivals.com. The Trojans didn’t catch the Tide in the 247Sports consensus, but could make another run in February. Coach Steve Sarkisian hasn’t landed as many “best of the best” players in this class, but almost every commitment is at least a four-star player.
