Having only four teams in the College Football Playoff makes it an exclusive championship to win, but many think it excludes too many talented teams.

For example, there’s a chance that three Power 5 champions could get left out this year, not to mention a potentially undefeated UCF squad.

On Wednesday, American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco told ESPN that he’s been giving a lot of thought to a potential expansion of the Playoff to eight teams in the near future:

“As they continue to do this strength of schedule, we’re somewhat at a disadvantage,” Aresco told ESPN on Wednesday. “Because if certain teams, like Ohio State and others, maybe had the schedule UCF has and they ran the table, would they still be in the playoff? That’s the question I would pose. I don’t know. You can answer that.

“The point is, I hadn’t really given a lot of thought to expansion of the playoff, but I’m giving more thought to it, only because it seems to me that if half of FBS is pretty much going to be left out of this. Then I think maybe you have to think more about it.”

Expanding to eight teams would potentially allow all five Power 5 champs to go to the Playoff, along with the top Group of 5 team and two wildcard squads.

It’s not likely to be changed in the next couple of years, but it’ll be interesting to see what form the Playoff takes in the future.
