Another FBS coaching vacancy was filled Friday.

Akron announced that Tom Arth will take over the program, which fired Terry Bowden earlier this month following a 4-8 season. Arth spent the last two years at FCS Chattanooga, which improved from three wins in his first season to six in 2018.

The 37-year-old’s coaching career started at Division III John Carroll University, where he compiled a 40-8 record and engineered three playoff appearances from 2013-16. Arth’s final John Carroll squad won 12 games and advanced all the way to the D-III semifinals.

Arth, who was born in nearby Cleveland, has close ties to the Akron area. He’ll succeed Bowden, who brought the Zips back to moderate relevance in the MAC during his seven years at the school.
