April brought bad news for a few SEC teams. But not without a silver lining.

Apparently, when it rains, it doesn’t always pour. Here’s a look at some happenings this month that might seem like a cause for concern, but they’re nothing that summer rays won’t rectify.

Alabama offense not allowed to shine

Good job, Alabama defense. Maybe too good. The offenses weren’t able to manage much at all during the spring game last Saturday. The first-team defense, playing on the White team, allowed just 131 total yards. The first-team offense only had 21 yards at halftime. The exhibition went into the break with the first- and second-team offenses not even able to get on the scoreboard.

Then, just when it looked like QB Cooper Bateman — who very well may be the team’s starter this season — looked like he might give the unit something to be proud of with a game-winning TD pass, he was intercepted by sophomore safety Ronnie Harrison in the end zone with 1:02 left to preserve a 7-3 win for the White team.

Coach Nick Saban said after the game, “I don’t think any conclusions can be drawn from anything that happened today.” That was especially true for the offenses. However, with all that said, the offense can go into the summer knowing it likely won’t play a defense that good when the games count. They just have to put up with them in practices.

Arkansas RB Kody Walker breaks foot

A year after RB Jonathan Williams was lost for the regular season due to a foot injury, Kody Walker also suffered one last week, going down with a broken foot at practice.

Walker, who rushed for 394 yards and 6 TDs on 90 carries during the 2015 season, is expected to be a major contributor to the team’s rushing attack in 2016. The Razorbacks rely heavily on their ground game, and the 6-foot-2, 251-pound senior provides the muscle to that attack.

However, fans in Fayetteville have nothing to fear as coach Bret Bielema released this statement about the injury:

“Unfortunately Kody suffered a broken foot during yesterday’s (April 12) practice. It required surgery that went well today and doctors expect a full recovery. It’s a pretty standard foot injury that we’ve dealt with in the past and we expect him to be full-go by June. If anyone knows how to battle adversity it’s Kody Walker.”

LSU LB Kendall Beckwith’s injury

LSU is dealing with a few key injuries right now, most notably to senior LB Kendell Beckwith (leader of the defense) and sophomore offensive lineman Will Clapp (projected to start at guard).

Beckwith was sidelined for much of the spring with a knee injury, but there weren’t a lot of details surrounding it like how severe it is and what the timetable is for his return. However, he shed some light on it after the team’s spring game, revealing it was a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury that didn’t require surgery, and he’s just banking on rest to help him recover.

“I can rest it now. The type of injury it was, it’s got to heal over time,” Beckwith said. “I feel like I’ll be good in another week or two.”

Clapp’s hip injury did require a procedure, which he planned on having this week, but he’s expected back in time for fall practices in August.

Tennessee loses two WRs to injury

Tennessee has been hit hard with injuries this spring. Real hard. As head coach Butch Jones pointed out, the team played without 24 players in its spring game.

One position at which the team can’t afford to be snake-bitten is wide receiver, and the team only had three scholarship wideouts in its spring game. Sophomore Jauan Jennings and redshirt freshman Vincent Perry suffered injuries in the week leading up to the game.

The good news is, Butch Jones said that the pair is expected back in mid-June, and many other players will be healed by the time fall comes around.

Ludacris’ contract with Georgia

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is getting a taste of what it’s like to be a head coach in the premier conference in college football. His school continues to get negative publicity about the contract the school agreed to with rapper Ludacris, who received $65,000 and several other head-turning items to perform at G-Day.

On Thursday, Smart was questioned about it on The Paul Finebaum Show, and here’s what he had to say: “I wasn’t privy to the contract and obviously we need to do a better job of handling situations like that.”

Smart has talked about uniformity being key to establishing Georgia’s brand based on what he learned under Nick Saban at Alabama. Well, you don’t do that by giving out condoms and alcohol to a rapper performing at your spring game.

With that said, one would figure Smart was telling the truth that he wasn’t aware of the details of the contract because he had two days to prepare his football team for a scrimmage in front of 93,000. Plus, this story will likely blow over in May.

Top Kentucky WR still has knee concerns

Kentucky fans likely got a scare when they saw an injury to receiver Dorian Baker. A knee procedure forced him to miss the spring game. The Wildcats’ receiving corps i a strength on the team, and Baker is a big part of that.

Last Friday, kentucky.com’s Jen Smith reported that Baker had his knee scoped after participating in nine practices. The junior had already suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss the last portion of the 2014 season.

However, the procedure was minor and Baker — who led UK with 55 receptions to go with 608 yards and 3 TDs last season — is expected back in June. That’s good news for a pass-catching group that didn’t perform well in the team’s spring game.

“Too many drops, real quiet and just didn’t have the energy we needed,” sophomore TE C.J. Conrad told the Lexington Herald-Leader. “So the leaders need to step up like myself.”

Key Mississippi State DB has surgery

The Clarion-Ledger brought some scary news for Mississippi State’s defense when it reported that sophomore defensive back Brandon Bryant had surgery on Thursday.

That’s not the kind of news you want to hear when it comes to a player that’s expected to be a key piece in new defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon’s scheme. However, the procedure to his wrist was minor, and Bryant is expected to return for summer workouts.

Bryant intercepted three passes in the team’s first spring scrimmage, and he led the Bulldogs last season with three interceptions (one returned for a TD), all in the last half of the season. Mississippi State needs him to be at full health for the fall, but it looks like he will be.
