Does anything drive a sports fan nuts faster than a college football team off to a bad start?

In the NFL, an 0-3 start is bad but teams have been known to rebound in the remaining 13 games and make the playoffs. In basketball, hockey and especially baseball, there is an eternity left on the schedule after an 0-3 start.

In college football? An 0-3 start, or sometimes even 1-2, might mean your goals for the season have already evaporated.

For a first-year college coach, it could also mean that any honeymoon period is over before it started. Just check out this funny video that portrays a Florida State fan eager to buy a used hot seat for Willie Taggart.

Fans are quick to react, especially in the age of social media, and new coaches don’t get much slack as a rule. There were 13 Power 5 schools that made changes in the offseason, if you include Matt Luke at Ole Miss and Mario Cristobal at Oregon shedding their interim tags.

So, from a scale of 1 to 10 — one being a love-fest, 10 being “fire him now” level of heat — how much do fans regret hiring their new coaches just three weeks into the season?

Joe Moorhead, Mississippi State: 1

The Bulldogs have a nice road win against a Power 5 foe (Kansas State) and two routs against subpar competition. No. 14 MSU gets two winnable games against SEC East foes next, then the West gauntlet hits, but so far Starkville is Pleasantville for Moorhead in his first SEC coaching job.

Mario Cristobal, Oregon: 1

One can’t help but wonder if Ducks fans aren’t chuckling just a little at FSU because Taggart bolted Eugene after one season. No bumps in the road yet for No. 20 Oregon, but the nonconference schedule (Bowling Green, Portland State, San Jose State) was super soft and No. 7 Stanford looms this Saturday.

Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M: 2

Really, the only qualm at this point is the size of Fisher’s contract: 10 years, $75 million. The Aggies lost to Clemson but that brought more raves for their performance than worries about being defeated. Then again, there’s this weekend’s trip to No. 1 Alabama and we’ve yet to see if A&M can ever win a game in November, right?

Jeremy Pruitt, Tennessee: 2

After the wreck that was the end of the Butch Jones tenure, and a tortuous coaching search, the Vols hired the former Alabama assistant. Nobody expected Tennessee to beat West Virginia anyway, and the Vols then crushed two patsies. A win Saturday over Florida would knock this down to about minus-4.

Dan Mullen, Florida: 3

Gators fans are not known for their patience (trust me, I live in Florida), but most seem to understand that this rebuilding job will take time and Mullen is a popular former UF assistant who did such a great job at Mississippi State. Yes, that Kentucky loss stings, but it won’t send too many into a tizzy … yet.

Jonathan Smith, Oregon State: 3

There are not a lot of Power 5 jobs tougher than this one. The Beavers are 1-2 under Smith, a former Oregon State quarterback, and at least his offense is averaging 38 points a game. That the Corvallis crew has still lost twice (including to Group of 5 Nevada) shows how far this program has to go to build a decent defense. After three weeks? They’re 129th out of 130 teams, allowing 46.3 per game.

Herm Edwards, Arizona State: 3

When Athlon Sports rated the 21 new FBS hires going into 2018, the magazine rated Edwards 21st, calling ASU’s choice “one of the most puzzling decisions in recent history.” A loss to San Diego State — a Group of 5 team but a pretty good one — followed a really nice win over Michigan State, so the jury’s still out.

Matt Luke, Ole Miss: 4

The Rebels’ defense looked really, really bad against Alabama. The Tide offense will do that often, but Ole Miss also gave up 41 points and 629 yards to FCS Southern Illinois. The D has tarnished Luke’s tenure after he took over on an interim basis last season. This is the job he wanted and he inherited a bowl ban, so fans might still cut him some slack for a while — maybe.

Kevin Sumlin, Arizona: 5

The Wildcats have a bye week in November, which might lead Texas A&M fans to ask, “Why couldn’t that have been us when Sumlin was here?” Of course, Sumlin probably wishes he could have brought some of those hot starts West. He opened 0-2. Houston blew out Arizona, and though they won, the Wildcats allowed 31 points to FCS foe Southern Utah, so building a winner in the desert is likely to take some time.

Chip Kelly, UCLA: 6

Good thing for Kelly he’s not in a hot house in the South or Midwest (besides, USC is off to a lousy start too). The Bruins are 0-3, including an embarrassing 38-14 loss to Fresno State, which was UCLA’s second home loss to a Group of 5 team. The starting quarterback’s dad is even angry. Geez, Jim Mora wasn’t good, but he didn’t leave that big of a mess.

Scott Frost, Nebraska: 7

Rumblings around Big Red Nation grew pretty loud after a home loss to Sun Belt Conference foe Troy. Frost inherited a program in dire shape and he’s a prodigal son returning home — plus quarterback Adrian Martinez is hurt — but Cornhuskers fans might not wait as long as you’d think to panic.

Chad Morris, Arkansas: 7

How could the Razorbacks, at 1-2, possibly be worse than last year? Well, at least last year they defeated New Mexico State; this season Arkansas has lost to Group of 5 teams Colorado State and North Texas. Up next: Auburn, then Texas A&M, then Alabama. Uh-oh.

Willie Taggart, Florida State: 9.99

You know, I owe Gator Nation an apology for mentioning their impatience. Seminoles fans are in SCREAMING FREAKOUT PANIC MODE ARRRGHHHH after three dreadful performances. Even a tweeter “who always looks at the positive side of things” wants Taggart fired. The close win over FCS Samford might have been worse than the blowout loss to Syracuse. Now a GoFundMe page has been set up to buy out Taggart’s contract … as Taggart is asking for patience. Wow.
