Each week, we’ll take a look at the credible and not-so-credible threats to freeze-out the SEC from the College Football Playoff.

One week into November, the college football playoff picture is starting to clear up. As the temperature continues to drop while fall transitions into winter, the number of teams that have hopes of competing in the College Football Playoff also continues to drop.

When the College Football Playoff Committee releases its top 4 teams on Tuesday, everyone will have a better idea of where the current contenders stand. But right now, there are 14 teams with a decent chance to earn one of those four spots.

Scanning the good guys: It was a great weekend for Alabama. First, Ole Miss fell at home in overtime to Arkansas, thus giving Alabama control of its own destiny in the SEC. Then the Crimson Tide took care of business against LSU, dominating a team that many thought was the best in the country. However, despite LSU’s 14-point loss to Alabama, the Tigers still have a chance to win their final three games of the regular season and make a run for a spot in the playoffs. All it takes is one loss from Alabama, and LSU once again controls its own destiny in the SEC west.

Also, Florida won the SEC East for the first time since 2009 with its 9-6 victory over Vanderbilt. However, Florida’s offense has to play much better if the Gators are going to win out and have a chance to win the SEC championship and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Now for the bad guys.

THREAT LEVEL: FROSTBITE WARNING

Below zero-degrees. Could lose a finger if you’re stuck outside too long.

Clemson: Clemson cleared its last major hurdle in the regular season with its 23-13 win over Florida State. The Tigers final three regular-season games are against teams with losing records (Syracuse, Wake Forest and South Carolina).

Ohio State: The Buckeyes are still undefeated after their 28-14 win over Minnesota on Saturday, which means they still control their own destiny to defend their College Football Playoff title. Even if QB J.T. Barrett is not starting, Ohio State’s defense is playing well enough to win most of its games.

Baylor: The Bears played well without their starting quarterback, Seth Russell. Russell’s backup, true freshman Jarrett Stidham, threw for 419 yards and three TDs in Baylor’s 31-24 win over Kansas State.

Oklahoma State: After its 49-29 demolition of previously undefeated TCU, Oklahoma State has to be considered a legitimate College Football Playoff contender. The Cowboys are undefeated and control their own destiny.

THREAT LEVEL: FREEZING RAIN

It’s not a blizzard, but it’s still likely to force public schools in the South to close.

Notre Dame: The Irish are currently ranked No. 5 and a win against Pittsburgh this weekend shouldn’t hurt their positioning. Notre Dame’s only loss was by two points on the road against Clemson. If the Irish can win out, which would include a win over Stanford, they have a chance. They would need Stanford to win the Pac-12 Championship and would need every team in the Big 12 to have at least one loss, but both of those scenarios could easily happen.

Stanford: Despite its Week one loss to Northwestern, Stanford can work its way into the playoffs if it defeats Notre Dame and wins the Pac-12 Championship game.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes keep on winning, which means they still control their own destiny.

Utah: The Utes’ only loss was on the road to USC. Utah will be favored in its final three regular-season games against Arizona, UCLA and Colorado. If Utah can win those games and beat Stanford in the Pac-12 title game, it is right back in the playoff conversation. Similar to Stanford though, the Utes’ need the Big 12 champion to have at least one loss on its resume in order to have a chance.

Oklahoma: The Sooners have to win out to have any chance of making the playoffs. If Oklahoma wins its final three games against Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma State, it might have the best resume of any one-loss team in the nation.

THREAT LEVEL: COLD RAIN

It’s miserable but manageable.

Michigan State: If the Spartans win out, they will head into the Big 12 championship game with wins over Michigan and Ohio State. Then if Michigan State could find a way to defeat an undefeated Iowa team for the Big Ten title, it could be considered for one of the College Football Playoff spots.

TCU: The Horned Frogs didn’t look like a top-four team in their 49-29 loss to Oklahoma State. In the loss, TCU had a season-high four turnovers that led to 21 Oklahoma State points. When you lose to the only ranked team that you have played this season, it’s tough to work you’re way back into the playoff conversation.

THREAT LEVEL: SUNNY

All you need is some sunshine to brighten your day.

Memphis: Navy ended Memphis’ perfect season by running through and around the Tigers’ defenders in its 45-20 victory. With the loss, Memphis no longer has a chance of making the College Football Playoff.
