Obviously, Alabama is the national champion, having taken down Georgia in a thrilling overtime contest to conclude the College Football Playoff.

However, UCF continues to tout their national title, saying they went undefeated, and therefore have a claim to the crown.

At this weekend’s NFL Combine, Auburn players were asked about who they consider to be the champ, as the Tigers beat Alabama, but lost to UCF in the Peach Bowl. Overwhelmingly, the Tigers support their SEC West rivals (via AL.com):

“Who played Georgia in the national championship game? There’s one team,” Kerryon Johnson said. “They have the trophy. They went through the playoffs. They played Georgia. They won. It’s as simple as that. Shoot any undefeated team could pop up and say, ‘We’re national champions.’ I mean, they didn’t play for it, that’s the bottom line.”

“They got the ring,” said Stephen Roberts, who initially committed to Alabama and flipped to Auburn. “At the end, they got the trophy.”

“Unless you play in the national championship game, I mean officially Alabama won it,” Braden Smith said. “So that’s all I’ll put forward.”

Indeed, the Tide have the CFP trophy, and they aren’t going to give it back just because UCF claims it should have gotten a chance in the Playoff.
