Editor’s note: SDS is ranking the 25 best SEC players — at any position — of the last decade. Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray is the fifth member of a 25-part daily series.

21.) GEORGIA QB AARON MURRAY (2009-13)

This four-year starter who appeared in two SEC championship games and shattered several school records during his tenure finished an illustrious career as the SEC’s all-time leading passer with 921 completions for 13,166 yards and 121 touchdowns.

The Tampa, Fla., native came to Georgia as a heralded five-star quarterback in 2009 and proved his worth from Day 1 after redshirting as a true freshman between the hedges. He compiled 11 games of 300 yards passing and started 52 consecutive games under center until his senior season was prematurely ended during the 2013 campaign following an ACL tear.

Murray is one of only three quarterbacks in college football history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in each of his four seasons. Only Florida’s Tim Tebow finished with more total touchdowns in SEC history.

Career numbers: 921-1,478, 13,166 yards (SEC record), 121 TD (SEC record), 41 INT
Individual superlatives: Two-time Davey O’Brien Award finalist; Two-time Maxwell Award finalist; Two-time All-SEC
NFL Draft: No. 163 overall (fifth round) in 2014
Defining moments: Often chided for not having stellar outings against nationally-ranked teams, Murray beat two top teams as a senior — sixth-ranked South Carolina and LSU — over a three-game span with eight touchdown passes and only one interception. Murray was 3-0 against in-state rival Georgia Tech and was awarded the 2012 Capital One Bowl MVP after throwing for a career-high 427 yards and five scores against Nebraska.
