The SEC is loaded with five-star running backs — 10 to be precise.

While there are just three former five-star quarterbacks in the entire SEC, Alabama and Georgia each claim three five-star running backs by themselves.

RELATED: Who has the best talent in the SEC at QB?

Add in 25 four-star running backs and it’s easier to understand why running back could represent the most impressive single-position collection of talent within the SEC.

Here’s a look at the team-by-team talent, followed by a few observations:

Team Total 4 or 5-star RBs Avg. Rating Other RBs
Alabama 5 4.6 0
Arkansas 2 3.3 4
Auburn 3 4.0 1
Florida 4 4.0 1
Georgia 4 4.4 1
Kentucky 1 3.3 3
LSU 4 4.0 1
Mississippi State 3 3.6 2
Missouri 1 3.2 5
Ole Miss 2 3.4 3
South Carolina 1 3.2 4
Tennessee 2 3.3 1
Texas A&M 3 3.7 3
Vanderbilt 0 3.0 4
  • Five different schools average at least a 4.0 recruiting rating among scholarship running backs: Alabama (4.6), Georgia (4.4), Auburn (4.0), Florida (4.0) and LSU (4.0), though that excludes former Gators walk-on Max Herndon (not rated).
  • Even at running back, making an impact in the SEC isn’t limited to four- and five-star athletes. Four teams project to start three-star running backs this fall: Missouri (Russell Hansbrough), Ole Miss (Jaylen Walton), Texas A&M (Tra Carson) and Vanderbilt (Ralph Webb).
  • Georgia and Florida are the only SEC East teams with more than two “quality” running backs (four or five stars). Arkansas and Ole Miss are the only two SEC West teams with fewer than three “quality” backs, though the Razorbacks hardly need a third featuring Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins.
  • UGA enters the season with a remarkable three healthy five-star backs. Alabama enters the season with two. The Tide does lead the SEC with five
  • Tennessee would make a sixth team with a 4.0 average star rating in the backfield, but the Vols recently added two-star Joseph Young, giving the team three scholarship running backs.
  • Vanderbilt is the only SEC team without a four- or five-star running back on the 2015 roster.
