Week in and week out, players and teams surprise us with their performances. We saw several surprises this weekend with an incredible slate of conference games.

Who or what made our cut of the biggest surprises of Week 13?

Don’t mess with Arkansas: Likely no one could’ve anticipated Arkansas pitching a 30-0 shutout against Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon, but the Razorbacks set the tone from the opening whistle. Arkansas had success moving the football against a good Landshark defense, but the story was the dominance of Robb Smith’s defense. The Hogs forced six turnovers, and flew around the field. This team is getting hot, and now faces a Missouri team with everything on the line.

Butch Jones’ botching end-of-game scenario: How weird were the final 90 seconds in Knoxville? The two onside kicks were weird enough, but then Jones’ decision to challenge baffled. It was a rookie coaching mistake by a veteran head coach, and unfortunately it took place in the national spotlight.

Auburn sleepwalks through win: The Tigers put an end to a two-game skid, but Auburn was far from impressive against its FCS opponent. Nick Marshall’s and company were held scoreless through a quarter and a half, and had to score 17 unanswered points to take a 10-point lead to intermission. There were some improvements on Saturday night, but Auburn fans have to be weary of this week’s trip to Tuscaloosa.

Maty Mauk’s play: If you can’t say enough about Missouri, here’s something else. Mauk completed just 12-of-25 passes for 230 yards, but he threw two touchdowns to zero interceptions. He was sacked several times, but came up big in the fourth quarter when the Tigers needed to put the game out of reach. It’s no coincidence that as Mauk has hit his stride, Mizzou has also. The win Saturday night sets up a huge game against Arkansas on Friday.
