Ten SEC teams went head-t0-head in Week 4. The SEC West looks mostly the same as it did in Week 3, but the SEC East standings have some surprises heading into October. How some teams won or lost also shows up on this week’s list.

Here’s a look at the most surprising storylines from Week 4:

5. The best in the West didn’t dominate: The SEC West’s two top-10 teams were supposed to cruise to easy victories on Saturday. No. 9 LSU opened as high as a 24-point favorite but needed a big day from RB Leonard Fournette (26 carries, 244 yards, two touchdowns) to fend off Syracuse 34-24 in the Carrier Dome. Vanderbilt was not expected to hang with No. 3 Ole Miss (27-point spread), but it took a Jaylen Walton touchdown run with 2:41 remaining before the Rebels could finally exhale in a 27-16 victory. Perhaps both teams were hung over from big wins over division rivals in Week 3.

4. Florida converted more fourth downs than third downs: When it came to third down, the Gator offense struggled mightily, converting only 3 of 15. But on fourth down, freshman QB Will Grier came up big with his back against the wall: 5-for-5, 123 yards passing and one touchdown. The touchdown was the game-winning 63-yard reception by WR Antonio Callaway on fourth-and-14.

3. Dobbs was Tennessee’s leading receiver: UT QB Joshua Dobbs caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from WR Jauan Jennings on a trick play in the first half against Florida. The next-closest UT pass catcher in receiving yards was TE Ethan Wolf with 45 yards. If the Volunteers had held on, Dobbs’ day as the leading passer, receiver and rusher might have made for fun trivia, but in the loss it highlights a problem with the passing game. Tennessee has a wealth of talented wide receivers, but they aren’t getting chances to make plays.

2. The SEC East standings look a lot different than expected: In the SEC East, No. 8-ranked Georgia is in the driver’s seat and Vanderbilt is at the bottom, as expected. But the other five teams are in an order that looks nothing like the poll from SEC Media Day. Florida, which was picked to finish fifth, is one of two undefeated teams in the division and is tied with UGA for the top spot. Right behind the Gators are the Kentucky Wildcats, who are 2-1 in conference play fresh off a 21-13 win over defending division champion Missouri. The Volunteers, Tigers and Gamecocks – picked to finish Nos. 2-4 – will go into October a combined 0-4 in conference play.

1. Auburn got shut out of the end zone at home: The Tigers’ 17-9 loss to Mississippi State marked the first time under Gus Malzahn (as offensive coordinator or head coach) in which they were held out of the end zone. Adding insult to injury, the Bulldogs pulled it off in front of the home Jordan-Hare Stadium crowd. War Eagle fans are going to be less thrilled with the new 10,830-square foot video board if it’s not showing Auburn touchdowns.
