Week in and week out, players and teams surprise us with their performances. We saw several surprises this weekend with a pretty good slate of conference and non-conference games.

Who or what made our cut of the biggest surprises of Week 4?

Missouri’s inexplicable loss to Indiana: A winless Indiana team from the Big Ten went into Faurot Field on Saturday and upset the reigning SEC East champs. Maty Mauk did his part but didn’t get much help from the rest of his teammates. The Tigers found themselves inside the Hoosier red zone three times, including on its final possessions of both the first and second halves. Had Mizzou been able to convert touchdowns on those two possessions instead of field goals, the Tigers likely win. The offensive line play was atrocious, and the defense had trouble tackling an average Indiana offense. The Tigers fell out of the Top 25 on Sunday and now travel to the other Columbia, the site of College GameDay, to face an inconsistent South Carolina team.

Florida’s defensive issues against Alabama: The Gators had pretty good success stopping the run against the Crimson Tide early in the game, but that was about the only bright spot for them on the defensive side of the ball. Bama quarterback Blake Sims torched the secondary, beginning on the first play of the Tide’s opening drive when Sims found a mismatch with linebacker Antonio Morrison out wide covering speedy Kenyon Drake. The defender got beat on the route and Sims hit Drake for 87 yards and a the 7-0 Bama lead. It would be the same story all day long with Sims having a career day finding just about any receiver he wanted to.

Blake Sims’ performance: My goodness, did any see that coming? Anyone? Sims had what was seemingly the game of his life on a huge stage in what has become one of the pretty good rivalries in the SEC. Sims went 23-of-33 for 445 yards and four touchdowns in the Tide’s win over Florida. Credit offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin who called a brilliant game and put Sims in situations to beat the defense all day. He completed 7-of-9 passes for 95 yards on third downs. Sims’ mark for 445 yards in a game was the second-most in program history.

Mississippi State’s win over LSU: This was a sexy pick for the upset all week long, but it was the way in which the Bulldogs won in Baton Rouge that caught our eye. Very few teams go into Tiger Stadium at night and leave with a win, and even fewer do it by scoring 34 points. Dak Prescott had another great game, but the night really belonged to running back Josh Robinson who ran for 197 yards and two scores on just 16 carries. Dan Mullen had a great game plan for his team, who notched just its third win over a Top 25-ranked team in his tenure in Starkville.

Vanderbilt’s preparation and fight nearly upset South Carolina: This is going to sound backward, but the Commodores punched South Carolina in the gut early in that football game. Before Steve Spurrier knew it, his team was down 14-0 to a Vandy team that hadn’t show much the previous three weeks of the season. Derek Mason did a fantastic job coaching his guys throughout the week and having them prepared for this game coming off their first win of the season. We’re beginning to see glimpses of why Vanderbilt hired Mason. The Commodores could be a pretty good football team as players continue to get familiar with his system and Mason gets a full year of recruiting under his belt.
