It’s become more common for some teams to play as if they don’t really want to be at their bowl games. On Thursday, Boston College reportedly really tried to leave the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl early.

About midway through the first quarter, the bowl game entered a prolonged weather delay because of lightning in the area. During the delay, The Athletic’s Justin Williams reports Boston College and Cincinnati were at odds about whether to simply cancel the game.

Williams reports Bearcats coach Luke Fickell and the school’s new athletic director John Cunningham “insisted on waiting” out the bad weather. The game did finally resume after about a 90-minute delay.

At the time of the delay, the game was locked in a scoreless tie and both teams had punted twice. Over the next 15 minutes, though, Cincinnati scored two touchdowns and field goal while Boston College has yet to move into the red zone.

Obviously, the Boston College players didn’t necessarily want the rest of the Birmingham Bowl cancelled, but it will be interesting to see if the Eagles remain focused and continue to play hard in the bad conditions after the long delay.

If one had to guess which teams would be willing to wait out a long weather delay, Boston College would figure to be one of them. The 2018 First Responder Bowl, which was between Boston College and Boise State, was cancelled because of bad weather, and the Eagles seniors were reportedly heartbroken they didn’t get to play one final game.

But Boston College sounded more than content to let that happen again Thursday.
