What a long, strange journey it’s been for Bru McCoy and he’s not even played a down of college football.

Be that as it may, the California receiver has been making headlines all offseason and that continues as the talented receiver has jumped back into the NCAA transfer portal after arriving at Texas this offseason. If you have forgotten, McCoy was the player that signed and enrolled at USC, only to leave the program via transfer for Texas.

The expectation is McCoy plans to return to USC.

247Sports Composite Rankings list McCoy as the No. 9 overall prospect in the country during the previous recruiting cycle and California’s No. 2 overall prospect. The five-star recruit committed to USC during his appearance at the 2019 All-American Bowl, live on national television.

McCoy has released the following statement, courtesy of Greg Biggins of 247Sports, announcing the news:

“After a lot of thinking and talking with my family, I’ve decided to leave UT and return home. This is purely a personal decision and is no reflection on the University of Texas. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of the UT community. UT is a fantastic school with an exceptional football program. I have the utmost respect for Coach Herman, his staff, and the players.

“I did not expect this turn of events, but am confident this is the best decision for me and my family. I’ve worked extremely hard and get where I am today, I am grateful for the opportunities I have and do not take them for granted. I appreciate those who have supported me even before I’ve set foot on a college football field. I will do my best to earn back any trust and respect I’ve lost as a result of this process. I will work hard to be the best teammate and person I can be as I prepare for the chance to compete again in the future. Thank you.”

It will be interesting to see if McCoy makes it to fall camp at USC or if he leaves for another program — maybe back to Texas? — in the coming weeks and months.
