In late September, tragedy struck Georgia high school football when Dylan Thomas of the Pike County Pirates died after playing in a game on Sept. 28.

Thomas, who played linebacker, fell in the third quarter of the Pike County-Peach County game. He required assistance to stand back up, but was alert and responsive to trainers. Thomas told trainers he had lost feeling in his left leg. The county coroner has now ruled that Thomas experienced cardiac arrest “as the result of a traumatic brain injury or as a consequence of a closed head injury”, according to a CNN report.

On the sideline, Thomas was examined by an orthopedic surgeon and a certified trainer. The newly released coroner report notes that Thomas’ condition began “deteriorating” roughly seven minutes after he had been helped off the field. When he lost consciousness, Thomas was taken to a rural hospital about an hour south of Atlanta. He was later taken to another hospital in Atlanta, where he passed away.

Thomas’ parents have decided against an autopsy. The coroner’s report is based off what was documented by paramedics and in the hospitals. The Georgia High school Association says there is no sign of any negligence. Thomas was 16.
