One of the difficult issues with the transfer portal is there are only limited restrictions for when players can move about. For example, May 1st was recently instituted as a deadline to be eligible for college football players to transfer and still be eligible to play this season.

However, there are not deadlines like there are in recruiting, for example, but ESPN College Football Playoff insider Heather Dinich offered a couple of options: One during the Early Signing Period in December, and another around April 15.

Dinich, who called “The Paul Finebaum Show” from the Fiesta Bowl Spring Summit, offered an update from the American Football Coaches Association. A proposal from that group centered on the 2 windows for the transfer portal to enter a player’s name in the portal, but not necessarily decide a school.

“They’re hoping that that will help things,” she said, and added that those windows weren’t put in place years ago because they were viewed as “too restrictive.”

The coaches association also wants to scrap the 25-player limit for scholarships for initial signings. The coaches’ plan is to allow more flexibility in order to reach the 85-scholarship limit.
