One of the more talked about issues on Tuesday during the first reveal of the playoff rankings, and going forward, will be the chance of two teams from the same conference making the College Football Playoff.

It’s been a possibility in previous years specifically with Big Ten and Big 12 schools, and this season, it’s primarily related to Alabama and Georgia.

“Nothing precludes it,” College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said, according to a report from the Athens Banner-Herald, before a weekend that included Penn State and TCU suffering their first losses. “Our charge is to pick the best four teams, period. There are no restrictions on that. I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually we will have two teams from the same conference. When that might happen, nobody knows. It’s certainly way too early to speculate this year because there’s so much football to be played.”

The tricky balance for the CFP committee is to meet its goal of finding the four best teams in the nation and match them on the field. But the selection criteria also emphasizes conference championships.

In 2014, 12-1 Ohio State beat out 11-1 Baylor and 11-1 TCU thanks to a Big 10 championship over Wisconsin.

Last year, the top four were Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington, which left out 11-2 Penn State out despite its win over Ohio State, the Big Ten title and Washington having a softer schedule.

This year, Alabama and Georgia are widely expected to be ranked at the top two spots when the first rankings come out on Tuesday.
