Clay Travis says Playoff committee is setting the table to avoid SEC semifinal rematch
The College Football Playoff committee has said that it doesn’t care about rematches in the semifinals, but Clay Travis of “Outkick the Coverage” is not a buyer on that theory.
“I don’t believe that,” he said. “I think they want to avoid the idea of a rematch in the seeded round games.”
That’s part of the reason LSU moved to No. 2 this week in the rankings — even though Travis believes the Tigers have a better resume — and while Georgia sits at No. 4, there’s a possibility that Alabama could take the fourth spot if Utah and Georgia lose. That could also be the case if the committee simply doesn’t believe a Pac-12 team is deserving there.
The committee also wants to avoid a Georgia-LSU rematch at Nos. 2 and 3, Travis said he believes.
Travis also points out that seeding has never mattered in the CFP, and the No. 1 team has never won it. The No. 2 and No. 4 seeds have been the only winners in five seasons. If this were an eight-team playoff, Travis said seeding would matter a great deal because of home-field advantage.
“The CFB playoff committee is already setting the table to avoid a rematch in the SEC. While they say they don’t care about rematches, I don’t believe them. Ohio State was bumped to #1 to avoid another LSU – Alabama game if the Tide slides in at #4.”—@ClayTravis pic.twitter.com/dfl1QgNDcG
