The College Football Playoff Selection Show is finally here.

After a long, 14-week season and conference championship weekend, the final rankings from the College Football Playoff selection committee will be released on Sunday. Those rankings will then be used to finalize the 12-team College Football Playoff field.

Here are the details for the final CFP rankings release of the 2024 season:

College Football Playoff selection show: TV info, time

  • Time: 12 p.m.-4 p.m. ET
  • TV: ESPN

The final CFP rankings show will begin at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon. As usual, the show will be broadcast on ESPN.

In addition to finalizing the 12-team bracket, the CFP selection committee will also rank teams 1-25. Bowl assignments will also trickle in throughout the show for teams who did not qualify for the College Football Playoff.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

Beginning this year, the College Football Playoff is expanding to include 12 teams for the first time ever. Previously, the CFP included just 4 teams.

Here’s how the format works: the 5 highest-ranked (by the selection committee) teams during Sunday’s rankings reveal will all receive automatic bids into the field. That leaves 7 at-large spots available for the most-deserving teams who did not win a conference championship.

Additionally, the 4 highest-ranked conference champs will also receive a first-round bye. Those teams will advance directly to the quarterfinal round where they will play a team who won a first-round game at a New Year’s Six bowl site.

This year, CFP quarterfinal games will be hosted by the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowls will host semifinal matchups. The national championship game will be played in Atlanta on Jan. 20, 2025.

Who will make the 2024 College Football Playoff?

While it won’t be official until the final rankings are revealed on Sunday, the following teams are expected to receive automatic berths in this year’s CFP: Oregon (Big Ten), Georgia (SEC), Arizona State (Big 12), Boise State (Mountain West) and Clemson (ACC). Each of those teams won their respective conference title games over the weekend.

The following 6 teams are also widely expected to be in the field based on previous rankings: Texas, Penn State, Tennessee, Ohio State, Indiana and Notre Dame. That leaves 1 spot available for 2 possible teams: SMU and Alabama.

Thile there is certainly a debate to be had between the Mustangs and Tide, a clear favorite does seem to be emerging. The betting markets have tilted in SMU’s favor as of Sunday morning. Saturday Down South’s Connor O’Gara is also projecting SMU to be in the field over Alabama.
