The cancelation of the 2020 SEC Tournament created shockwaves in the southeast, but to many, the bigger question is what will happen to spring football and recruiting?

Football is the engine that drives the bus for most in SEC country and according to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, no determination has been made regarding spring football at this time.

During his Thursday afternoon press conference, Sankey was asked what the status of spring practice would be following the cancelation of sports events across the SEC until March 30, at the earliest.

“I was on a conference call with an at one of our athletics departments where that was asked,” Sankey responded. “Our athletic directors talked about that afterwards, so, we’ve limited the size, clearly, of on-campus events and campuses are doing that individually but I don’t have a prescriptive list right now, around what’s going to happen with spring practice, spring football.”

Based on that response, it’s clear all information is fluid as news continues to develop and so much is on Sankey’s plate at the moment. While spring football has not been shut down, the commissioner offered a more concrete answer when asked about football recruiting.

Until further notice, football recruiting will be put on hold for the SEC and the Sankey would like to see the NCAA mandate that across the sport.

“I’ll go larger, there’s no list for any of this. I have an undergraduate degree, a Master’s Degree from Syracuse. So, this was never in one of my master’s classes,” Sankey noted of the rarity of the situation he’s dealing with. “We have a few law degrees in our offices, I’ve checked with each of them. No, they never had this one in their law school classes. So, that’s reality.

“We’re learning we’re making the best decisions on the best available information. We did have conversations about recruiting I referenced, and have stopped off-campus and on-campus recruiting for a period of time that could be extended. I’ve identified I think the NCAA needs to fully engage on that, that issue as well. The practice issue may be for them nationally, I think we had some conversations I don’t know that we came to a destination. And so that means it’s still on that.”
