There has been a lot of talk of an SEC bias at ESPN, and a number of personalities at the “worldwide leader” have attempted to dispel any notion that the networks are biased toward the SEC in the last week.

Those personalities include College GameDay’s Chris Fowler, who explained the benefit of including teams from all across the country in the first-ever College Football Playoff during last week’s show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Agree or disagree, Fowler calmly articulated his defense against any perceived ESPN-SEC bias, although it was ironic Fowler chose to explain the lack of bias while broadcasting at the site of an epic SEC showdown between Ole Miss and LSU.

Another ESPN personality to comment on the matter — the SEC Network’s Brent Musburger — was not as well-spoken in defending against proclaimers of an SEC bias while broadcasting the game between Auburn and South Carolina Saturday night.

Here’s what Musburger had to say, all wrapped into one, succinct statement:

Musburger’s argument is that the SEC has the most ranked teams of any conference, as well as the most top 10 teams of any conference in America, and as a result ESPN is simply covering the best teams, not showing bias to a conference with which it shares a TV deal.

Those comments were backed up by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, which put three SEC teams in the Top 4 of its inaugural poll Tuesday night. (Although ESPN televised the release of the poll, it has nothing to do with the selection process.)

Nevertheless, Musburger was rather blunt with his statement, and although the viewing audience at the time was almost exclusively SEC fans, he could have handled the matter more like Fowler.
