In late April, a development in the FBI’s probe into the corruption of college sports, which has primarily focused on college basketball recruiting, rocked the college football world. Clemson assistant basketball coach Steve Smith was talking to an undercover FBI agent in 2017 about recruiting highly sought-after athletes when he remarked, “That’s why football is so successful, is if you do it and use resources at Clemson, like you can really keep everything tight.”

Clemson was quick to issue a statement on the matter saying it would “immediately conduct a review.” This past week, Dabo Swinney commented on the matter.

“Just disappointed because I know how we run our program,” Swinney said at a ‘Prowl and Growl’ event in Florence, South Carolina per The Charlotte Observer. “I’m very proud of how we run our program. We’ve always been a program committed to doing things the right way. And we always will be.”

According to Matt Connolly, Swinney had not heard from Smith, but he did hear from head coach Brad Brownell.

“Brad certainly did (apologize) and I appreciated that,” Swinney said.
