The last two seasons, Alabama and Florida have represented their respective divisions in the SEC Championship Game. Last month, the Crimson Tide showed that the Gators have a long way to go if they hope to take back the conference. If the difference is talent, UF isn’t making up any ground this recruiting cycle.

Gator Country reporter Nick de la Torre tweeted an ESPN graphic shown during Sunday’s Under Armour All-America game that shows that Alabama has more elite prospects (18) pledged than Florida has total (15) in its 2017 class.

To be fair to Florida, the 2017 class was not set up to be a large one. The 2016 senior class is on the small side, having underwent its share of transfers and early departures to the NFL Draft. It’s still worrisome that Florida only has 15 commitments at this point, as there will certainly be transfers and more juniors declaring for the NFL Draft.

In his first full recruiting cycle, coach Jim McElwain signed a class rated No. 12 by the 247Sports Composite. Florida’s 2017 class is ranked No. 19 nationally and No. 8 in the SEC by the site. While the above tweet compared the Crimson Tide and Gators, it’s worth noting that division rival Georgia’s 15 commits on the ESPN 300 is the same number of UF’s total pledges at this point.

Alabama picked up a commitment from four-star S Xavier McKinney earlier in the day.
