Life is full of what ifs. College football isn’t any different.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football, ESPN released a list of the 11 biggest “what ifs” in the sport’s history, three of which directly had to do with Alabama.

Specifically, two of the moments dealt with Nick Saban. No. 3 on the list asked “what if” the Miami Dolphins had signed Drew Brees while No. 6 proposed the question “what if” Rich Rodriguez had accepted the Alabama coaching job?

It’s a little weird at first seeing Brees and the Dolphins on the list, but had Miami been able to land Brees, it’s possible that Saban would have stayed in Miami longer than he did. If so, then he wouldn’t have taken the Alabama coaching job in 2007, and everything as we know it in the SEC and college football the last decade would be different.

Or maybe it simply would have changed Brees’ career? Sean Payton played an intricate role in turning Brees from a Pro Bowl talent into an All-Pro, and maybe Saban, a defensive-minded coach, would have returned to the college ranks in the same amount of time anyway.

Everything this last decade would have been different too if Rodriguez had left West Virginia a year earlier than he did. Rodriguez took the Michigan job opening in 2008, but he had an offer from Alabama in 2007 before declining it to stay with the Mountaineers.

Alabama and the Dolphins popped up again on the list at No. 9. In 1969, Bryant told Alabama that he was leaving to coach Miami, but 24 hours later, he supposedly changed his mind and quickly returned to the Crimson Tide.

That decision worked out for both sides. Bryant won 130 more games for Alabama while the Dolphins hired Don Shula instead.
