Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man Wednesday walking outside his vehicle on Interstate 690 around 11:30 p.m, according to Syracuse.com.

The man who died from the incident was in an unrelated auto accident before getting hit by Boeheim’s vehicle. The man who died got out of his car to assess the damage caused by the first accident when Boeheim’s vehicle struck him.

The Orange beat Louisville 69-49 Wednesday night, and the tragedy happened after the game.

ESPN’s College GameDay was scheduled to visit Syracuse for its game against No. 1 Duke; however, the pregame show released a statement that explained that it had canceled its trip due to the recent tragedy.

“Due to the recent tragedy, and after careful consideration due to the celebratory nature of the show, ESPN’s College GameDay will originate from ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., this weekend, instead of at Syracuse University,” ESPN PR said in a statement. “We spoke with school officials and they understand the decision.”

Syracuse AD John Wildhack also released a statement following the tragedy.

“We respect ESPN’s decision to originate College GameDay from Bristol this weekend and appreciate their concern for our community during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Earlier Thursday, Boeheim released a statement.

“I am heartbroken that a member of our community died as the result of last night’s accident. Juli and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Jimenez family. Out of respect for those involved, I will not be providing further comment at this time.”

Syracuse takes on Duke Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET at the Carrier Dome.
