Leonard Fournette is having a huge season for LSU. But Clemson coach Dabo Swinney believes his conference may have college football’s best running back.

At his weekly press conference, Swinney said Florida State running back Dalvin Cook was “the best running back in the country” during the Seminoles’ 29-24 victory over Miami on Oct. 10. Cook had a huge night against the Hurricanes, rushing for 269 yards on 25 carries and scoring three touchdowns.

“They did a great job against Florida State outside of three plays, and they were going against as good a player as there is in the country in Dalvin Cook,” Swinney said. “That guy is a freak. They couldn’t have done a better job, but he made three plays in that game that won the game.”

That led one reporter to ask Clemson’s coach if Cook was even better than Fournette.

“It’s like comparing Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota,” Swinney said. “They’re both really good, but if you can only pick one, I’m taking Dalvin Cook. They’re both phenomenal players, and I’ve seen (Fournette) a good bit.”

Fournette has rushed for 1,202 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven games. Cook has run for 955 yards and 10 touchdowns in six games. Cook is averaging more yards per carry (8.7) than Fournette (8.0) and more yards after contact, and he’s played a big part in Florida State’s passing game. Fournette has 172 more yards of total offense and three more touchdowns than Cook, but the FSU back has 32 fewer touches and has played the past few games with a bad hamstring. Cook has 16 plays of 20 yards or more, while Fournette has 13. Both backs have led their teams to undefeated starts.

All things considered, a team would be fortunate to have either running back.

“Maybe it’s just more style of play,” Swinney said. “I haven’t seen everybody, but they’re the two best guys I’ve seen out there.”
