Greg McElroy has proposed a different label for this week’s slate of SEC games, which typically features a slew of non-conference opponents in lopsided games ahead of Rivalry Week next week.

Goodbye Cupcake Week, hello Lettuce Week, McElroy said he’d like to see, borrowing a phrase from his WJOX co-host Cole Cubelic.

McElroy’s point is that most people enjoy cupcakes, while almost no one asks for extra lettuce in a given situation.

“It’s there, it is what it is, it doesn’t really make the sandwich better, and it also doesn’t really add any value whatsoever, to your regular season schedule,” McElroy said on his “Always College Football” podcast. “I want to see this week completely destroyed. … We don’t need this, it’s not good for college football.

Although McElroy said the SEC has improved on the overall schedule, and the issue is not exclusive to the SEC, he proposed a better solution, more of a “crescendo.”

“We should be peaking at this point in the season in excitement,” he said. “This should technically, by the letter of the law, be the second most important week of the regular season.”

Ultimately, he said this kind of scheduling at this point in the season needs to be “completely gotten rid of.”
