Greg Sankey was among the conference commissioners in the meetings in Indianapolis this weekend to discuss the expansion of the College Football Playoff.

The CFP leaders met Saturday and Monday, but they remain at a stalemate on how to expand the national championship format and because they could not reach unanimity, there’s therefore no decision on expansion.

“It was described that we’re in overtime. This may be a 9-overtime game where nobody can score a two-point conversation right now. But that doesn’t mean you stop,” he said. “If nationally we were aligned, we wouldn’t have walked out of that meeting with people disappointed.”

Bill Hancock, executive director of the Playoff, earlier told reporters that the timing isn’t right for some, bowl issues remain, and automatic qualifier status is still a sticking point.

The issue remains how to approach the path to expand. The 10 conference commissioners that make up the management committee, along with Notre Dame’s athletic director, each support expanding the playoff from 4 teams. How to do it and when is more complicated and has not been agreed to over several meetings. Unanimous consensus among the management committee members is needed to alter to the current deal.
