We’re now four weeks into the college football season, and already some of the SEC’s Heisman Trophy candidates are starting to separate themselves.

LSU RB Leonard Fournette and Georgia RB Nick Chubb are joined by USC QB Cody Kessler as very, very early favorites for the award, but it’s still early enough in the process that opinions will change from week-to-week.

As each one passes, we’re going to assess their performance and re-calibrate this list to better reflect the chances of an SEC player bringing home the hardware for the first time since former Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel did so in 2012.

Let’s see how they fared in Week 4:

SEC HEISMAN HOPEFUL RANKINGS

1. RB Leonard Fournette, LSU

2015 stats: 73 carries for 631 yards and eight rushing touchdowns; two catches for 16 yards in three games.

Week 4 performance: Fournette followed up his 228-yard, three-touchdown Week 3 performance with an even bigger number against Syracuse in Week 4. He ran for 244 yards and two touchdowns, marking the third consecutive game of 150-plus rushing yards to begin the season. His season totals through three games are staggering, and it’s important to remember when comparing his season totals to other candidates that he is one game short due to the cancellation of Week 1’s meeting with McNeese State due to inclement weather.

Status: Fournette may have put the college football world on notice in Week 3, but he won them over in Week 4. He has to be considered the guy to beat for the Heisman Trophy after one month of football.

2. RB Nick Chubb, Georgia

2015 stats: 71 carries for 599 yards and six rushing touchdowns; three catches for 37 yards and a touchdown in four games.

Week 4 performance: Chubb has become a near automatic 100-yard rusher, and Week 4 was no exception in that regard. In spite of playing an overmatched Southern team, Chubb stayed on the field long enough to extend his 100-yard game streak to 12, running 15 times for 131 yards in the blowout victory. He also scored three touchdowns, including his first of the season as a pass-catcher.

Status: He’s a superstar and a top tier choice for the Heisman Trophy. If not for Fournette, he’d likely be the guy that the college football world is talking about right now.

3. QB Chad Kelly, Ole Miss

2015 stats: 71 of 115 passing for 1,219 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions; 19 carries for 57 yards and three rushing touchdowns in four games.

Week 4 performance: Overall, most would consider the Rebels’ performance against Vanderbilt as a bit of a letdown following Week 3’s win at Alabama, but Kelly and company handled business. He threw a season-high 42 times, completing 24 passes for 321 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions, which is also a season high.

Status: The yardage and the victory were good for the campaign, but the multiple interceptions will hurt in a race against guys like USC QB Cody Kessler and Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott that have limited turnovers thus far.

4. QB Dak Prescott, Mississippi State

2015 stats: 95 of 142 passing for 1,069 yards and seven touchdowns, no interceptions; 30 carries for 121 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Week 4 performance: Prescott and the Bulldogs won a big game at Auburn to improve to 1-1 in SEC play and 3-1 overall. It has moved the Bulldogs back into the Top 25 and the national eye, which should help Prescott’s Heisman campaign. He completed 29 of 41 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns, which is solid. But he’s just not the rushing factor he was a year ago, running six times for 14 yards. That may help the Bulldogs win more games in the long run, but it probably hurts his Heisman hopes as voters love stats.

Status: He hasn’t been nearly as exciting this season, but has been steady and has yet to turn the ball over. He’s a couple more big conference wins from being a serious contender again.

5. RB Derrick Henry, Alabama

2015 stats: 67 carries, 422 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns; seven receptions for 51 receiving yards in four games.

Week 4 performance: While the Crimson Tide took care of business in a 34-0 win against Louisiana Monroe, it was a pretty uninspiring performance for Henry’s Heisman campaign. He ran 13 times for 52 yards and a touchdown, which is workman-like, but hardly elite. Henry battled an illness during the week leading up to the game, so that may have factored into his numbers.

Status: He’s slipping down the rankings after a lukewarm performance against Louisiana Monroe. A head-to-head match with Georgia RB Nick Chubb this week offers a chance to jump back into the conversation.

On the watch list: Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd; Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk; Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett; Ole Miss DL Robert Nkemdiche; Arkansas RB Alex Collins.
