The SEC got a big boost last week, thanks to Texas A&M’s win at Auburn.

As a result, coaches still placed eight SEC teams in their poll while sports writers included the same number of conference squads in the Associated Press Top 25.

Among SEC teams, the Aggies made the biggest jump in the AP Poll following their 29-16 victory over the Tigers. Texas A&M moved up seven spots from No. 17 to their current ranking of No. 10.

But should the Aggies have moved up that far? And are other teams deservedly where they should be?

Based on last week’s results and not falling victim to massive overreactions, here’s how the AP Top 25 Poll should’ve looked based on Week 3 performances.

How the AP Top 25 Poll Should’ve Looked

1. Alabama (3-0; 50 first-place votes) — The Crimson Tide can finally exhale. Alabama stayed unbeaten while snapping its two-game losing streak against Ole Miss. Bama next gets a home game against Kent State, Nick Saban’s alma mater. Kentucky comes to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 1 before the Tide visits Arkansas the following week. Bama, which should be 5-0 by then, is still clearly the nation’s best team, but other contenders for the top spot are emerging. Expect Saban to use that development, among other things, as motivation.

2. Louisville (3-0; 6 first-place votes) — The Cardinals moved up seven spots in the AP Poll, and their 63-20 victory over Florida State, previously the No. 2 team in country, was the most impressive win of the week. Louisville also boasts the best player in America in Lamar Jackson, and all he’s doing is averaging six total touchdowns a game. The Cards visit Marshall on Saturday before their next biggest game of the season at Clemson the following week. Here’s hoping both teams remain undefeated entering that matchup.

3. Ohio State (3-0, 4 first-place votes) — The Buckeyes looked sharp in winning at Oklahoma while potentially knocking the Sooners out of the College Football Playoff race. Their reward is Big Ten home games against Rutgers and Indiana before visiting Wisconsin on Oct. 15.

4. Houston (3-0) — The Cougars struggled at Cincinnati before outscoring the Bearcats 28-6 in the fourth quarter. But they already have two things Michigan doesn’t – a win over a ranked team and a road victory. An unbeaten season is definitely a possibility: Houston’s toughest remaining regular-season game is a home matchup with Louisville on Nov. 17.

5. Michigan (3-0; 1 first-place vote) — The Wolverines spotted Colorado a 21-7 lead before eventually pulling away to beat the Buffaloes by 17. It didn’t set up its schedule, but Michigan has yet to leave Ann Arbor for a game. After two more home matchups against Penn State and Wisconsin, the Wolverines finally hit the road to take on Rutgers on Oct. 8. Like Houston, Michigan could run the table until its Nov. 26 showdown with Ohio State in Columbus.

6. Clemson (3-0) — The Tigers finally played like everyone expected they would in Saturday’s 59-0 home rout of South Carolina State. Their most impressive win — a season-opening 19-13 victory at Auburn – isn’t all that impressive anymore. But they’ll get a chance to move up in the polls when they face Louisville on Oct. 1 if they win at Georgia Tech on Saturday.

7. Stanford (2-0) — The Cardinal were their typically methodical selves in their 27-10 victory over USC. But three of their next four games are road trips to UCLA, Washington and Notre Dame. Good luck with that.

8. Michigan State (2-0) — Things did get hairy for the Spartans, who took a 29-point lead over Notre Dame before holding on to win 36-28. Michigan State doesn’t get much time to rest as Wisconsin comes to East Lansing on Saturday.

9. Texas A&M (3-0) — All is good in College Station as the Aggies are unbeaten and tied for first in the SEC West with Alabama and LSU. They face another test as they face Arkansas on Saturday night.

10. Washington (3-0) — After beating Rutgers, Idaho and Portland State by a combined 148-30 score, the Huskies finally kick off Pac-12 play by visiting Arizona on Saturday. Six days later, Washington hosts Stanford in a battle of the conference’s two best teams.

11. Wisconsin (3-0) – The Badgers have injury issues at running back, questions at quarterback and are coming off a shaky home win over Georgia State. Saturday’s visit to Michigan State starts a three-game stretch against AP top 10 opponents.

12. Georgia (3-0) — A week after struggling to beat Nicholls State at home, the Bulldogs rallied to beat Missouri on the road. Jacob Eason’s TD pass to Isaiah McKenzie on fourth down was the biggest play of the season so far. Georgia’s SEC slate continues with a visit on Saturday to Ole Miss. The Bulldogs haven’t faced the Rebels since 2012.

13. Florida State (2-1) – The only reason the Seminoles are above Tennessee is because the Volunteers struggled with Ohio at home.

14. Tennessee (3-0) — About those Volunteers, who are decimated with injuries. On Saturday, Tennessee hosts Florida, which has beaten the Vols 11 straight times. The game against the Gators is the first of four straight matchups against top 20 opponents.

15. Arkansas (3-0) — The Razorbacks tuned up for Saturday night’s home game against Texas A&M with a 42-3 pasting of Texas State. With all due to respect to LSU, the matchup with the Aggies will go a long way toward determining the second-best team in the SEC West.

16. Miami (3-0) — Life is good for Mark Richt and the Hurricanes, who did what Tennessee couldn’t do, which is blow out Appalachian State. After having a bye this week, Miami kicks off ACC play with a visit to Georgia Tech on Oct. 1.

17. Florida (3-0) — The Gators lost starting QB Luke Del Rio to injury in last week’s 32-0 win over North Texas. Florida might have to start Austin Appleby in its biggest game of the year so far – Saturday’s visit to Tennessee. At least the Gators’ defense has been one of the nation’s best through three games.

18. LSU (2-1) — In a game that was closer than it should’ve been, the Tigers held off Mississippi State at home by a field goal. QB Danny Etling was solid, and Leonard Fournette rushed for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns. But his two fumbles are an immediate concern. LSU visits Auburn on Saturday night.

19. Oklahoma State (2-1) — Not only should the Cowboys be 3-0, but they should still be ranked in the Top 25 even though they struggled at home before beating Pittsburgh.

20. Baylor (3-0)

21. Nebraska (3-0)

22. San Diego State (3-0)

23. Utah (3-0)

24. Texas (2-1)

25. Ole Miss (1-2) — The Rebels rallied from an 18-point deficit before eventually losing to Alabama by 5 points. In a game that was eerily similar to its season-opening loss to Florida State, Ole Miss blew a 21-point lead to the Crimson Tide. And it doesn’t get any easier for the Rebels, who face three ranked opponents over their next four games, starting with Saturday’s home date against Georgia.
