We are halfway through the regular season, and the ups and downs in the SEC West continued on Saturday.

LSU bounced back, while Ole Miss showed that its struggles defensively could be here to stay.

The closer it gets to Nov. 25, the more it’s looking like this year’s Iron Bowl could be the most significant one since the Auburn “Got a Second” Tigers upset Alabama 34-28 en route to their second national title appearance in four years.

LSU might have something to say about that, however, as they now control their destiny.

Here’s a look at what all happened inside the West during Week 6.

Alabama

Saturday’s performance wasn’t the Tide’s best, but they did go to College Station against a 4-1 Aggies team and come out with an 8-point victory (27-19).

The Tide also had four sacks — making it nine total over the last two weeks — which is a substantial improvement from the five they logged over the course of the first four games.

The bad news was that the team saw more players forced out due to injury. WR Calvin Ridley’s thigh bruise shouldn’t hold him out long, and CB Tony Brown is day-to-day with a sprained knee.

Arkansas

With its only wins coming against Florida A&M and New Mexico State, the Razorbacks don’t have a quality victory in 2017.

Arkansas was beaten handily by South Carolina 48-22 on Saturday, but what makes matters worse is that the Hogs could be without their starting quarterback against the No. 1 team in the country in Week 7.

QB Austin Allen didn’t play in the fourth quarter against the Gamecocks due to a shoulder injury, and it’s unknown when he’ll be back. If he can’t go, things could get really ugly for the Razorbacks on the road against Alabama.

Auburn

There wasn’t a more impressive team in the SEC West on Saturday than Auburn.

The Tigers beat up on the state of the Mississippi for the second week in a row with a 44-23 blowout of the Ole Miss Rebels, and the offense looks like it might be the most balanced in the division.

For the fifth time in six games, Auburn was without either Kamryn Pettway or Kerryon Johnson in its backfield. The good news is that Johnson was able to handle the workload by himself, rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

Pettway wasn’t the only player to miss time due to injury. LB Tre’ Williams left the game after aggravating a shoulder injury that had forced him to miss the previous two weeks, and starting LG Mike Horton injured his left ankle.

LSU

It’s been an odd two weeks for LSU. After getting beat at home versus a non-Power 5 team in Troy, the Tigers went into The Swamp to hand No. 21 Florida its second loss of the season.

LSU looked much-improved in the trenches on both sides of the ball, but the real test will come in Week 7 against Auburn, one of the country’s hottest teams.

Mississippi State

The Bulldogs’ bye week couldn’t have come at a better time with the team needing to regroup following consecutive blowout losses to Georgia (31-3) and Auburn (49-10).

State did receive some good news with the commitment of 3-star TE Geor’Quarius Spivey.

Ole Miss

The state of Alabama has really laid it on the Rebels — or, is it the Landsharks now? I can’t keep up. A late touchdown from RB Jordan Wilkins made the score against Auburn look more respectable, but getting beat 110-25 by Alabama and Auburn isn’t a good look.

Texas A&M

While they did suffer their second loss of the season, it’s clear that the Aggies are improving.

The defensive front did an excellent job containing Alabama’s run game — outside of a 75-yard touchdown from Damien Harris early in the game — and the team as a whole did an excellent job overcoming adversity when down 24-3.

True freshman QB Kellen Mond proved to be the real deal, completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 237 yards and a touchdown, including this scrambling dime:

Quote of the week

“I’m trying to get our players to listen to me instead of you (the media) guys. All that stuff you write about how good we are, all that stuff they hear on ESPN, it’s like poison. It’s like taking poison. Like rat poison.” — Nick Saban following Alabama’s 27-19 victory over Texas A&M.
