One thing was made clear in Week 6: the SEC teams from the state of Alabama are clearly the top two teams in the SEC West.

Sure, Texas A&M may have the same record as Auburn, but the Aggies aren’t even close to being as impressive, from top to bottom, as the Tigers.

LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State all looked atrocious.

Find out what all else went down in the SEC West in Week 5:

Alabama

Well, if there were any questions as to whether or not the Tide is still the No. 1 team in the country, they put those to rest after the 66-3 beatdown they put on Ole Miss.

Over the course of the last two weeks, Alabama has out-gained (1,290 yards to 331), outscored (125-3) and out-coached both of its SEC opponents.

The Tide also hasn’t turned the ball over once this season.

While the statuses of Trevon Diggs and Da’Shawn Hand, who was carted off the field during Saturday’s game against the Rebels, are unknown, the Tide otherwise seemed to come away from the game healthy. Head coach Nick Saban believes Hand’s injury is an MCL strain, which could be a best-case scenario after the initial fears.

Arkansas

Yet again, the Razorbacks’ offensive line looked shaky when protecting quarterback Austin Allen. While it didn’t give up any sacks, there were multiple occasions where Allen was either pressured or hit.

It was nice to see Devwah Whaley receive a majority of the team’s carries. He rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Arkansas gave up 344 yards through the air against New Mexico State, including 174 to receiver Jaleel Scott. That’s not good considering the Razorbacks play South Carolina in Week 7, a team that has one of the SEC’s best passing attacks.

Auburn

What is it about teams from the state of Alabama turning it on when SEC play starts?

Like Alabama, Auburn is 2-0 in the SEC, and the Tigers absolutely dominated both opponents — Missouri and Mississippi State.

Transfer quarterback Jarrett Stidham has certainly turned it on, completing 78.8 percent of his passes for 482 yards and 3 touchdowns since SEC play started. In addition, Kerryon Johnson has rushed for 8 touchdowns.

Auburn might be the only team in the SEC with a chance of dethroning Alabama, due to its ability to field a complete team.

LSU

Since an impressive 27-0 opening win over BYU in Week 1, LSU’s season has slowly been spinning out of control.

The 37-7 loss to Mississippi State seemed like it was rock bottom, but come to find out, it wasn’t even close.

On Saturday, the Tigers lost to a non-Power 5 opponent for the first time since 2002. The final score between LSU and Troy was 24-21, but it wasn’t even that close. The LSU offense wasn’t even able to convert a third-down, finishing 0-for-9.

Ole Miss

So, it may be difficult for us to accurately determine who had a tougher day, Ole Miss or LSU.

Yes, LSU got upset by a non-Power 5 opponent, but the Rebels were completed embarrassed by Alabama, falling 66-3.

Shea Patterson did show some glimpses of why he’s one of college football’s best young quarterbacks, however.

  • 25-yard completion to DK Metcalf
  • 35-yard completion to DeMarkus Lodge
  • 23-yard completion to Dawson Knox
  • 37-yard completion to DeMarkus Lodge

The sophomore wasn’t great, but he did show why the comparisons to Johnny Manziel are warranted.

Mississippi State

Now that I think about it, that state of Alabama put quite the beating on the state of Mississippi in Week 5. Not only did Ole Miss get embarrassed by Alabama, but Auburn showed that Mississippi State is a pretender.

The Bulldogs have been outscored 80-13 over the course of the last two weeks, and star quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has averaged only 120 yards through the air while turning the ball over four times.

State will face off against BYU, which lost 27-0 against its first SEC opponent (LSU) this season, in Week 6 before returning home to continue SEC play against Kentucky in Week 7.

Texas A&M

The 24-17 victory over South Carolina wasn’t pretty, but it did show that this A&M team can overcome adversity. This is now the second week in a row that the Aggies have pulled off a come-from-behind win — they beat Arkansas in overtime 50-43 in Week 5.

The more surprising development might be the emergence of Kellen Mond, who has thrown for 375 yards and 2 touchdowns since SEC play opened two weeks ago. The true freshman has also managed to lead the team in rushing yards over the last two weeks (204) as well.

While he is young, Mond might be the best shot the Aggies have at bringing down Alabama next Saturday.

“I don’t really care about how many points we’ve scored in the past four games. I only care about how many points we score in the next game.” — Nick Saban following the 66-3 victory over Ole Miss
