The integration of analytics in the sports world has come a long way in recent years but those metrics appear to have much further to go when it comes to making wise decisions on draft day.

Case in point, according to Cynthia Frelund, one of NFL Network’s analytics experts, someone named Tristan Wirfs would be selected before Joe Burrow in the 2020 NFL Draft if the picks were made based on analytics.

It must be noted that the latest analytics-based mock from NFL.com is not attempting to predict how the upcoming draft will play out, the goal is to maximize each team’s potential to win as many games as possible in 2020.

Frelund states that clearly after likely receiving several emails from furious readers:

I am NOT attempting to predict or divine what teams will ACTUALLY DO on draft day. This is not meant to predict how the draft will play out in reality. Rather, I am using this model to, again, examine what teams should do if winning the most games in 2020 is the only goal. The exercise I am taking you through here considers current rosters and the overall market of remaining free agents.

Here are the top 10 selections in the Analytics-based mock draft:

#1 Bengals – Chase Young, DE, Ohio State

#2 Redskins – Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia

#3 Lions – Jeff Okudah, DB, Ohio State

#4 NY Giants – Tristan Wirfs, OL, Iowa

#5 Dolphins – Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

#6 Chargers – Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama

#7 Panthers – Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson

#8 Cardinals – Mekhi Becton, OL, Louisville

#9 Jaguars – Derrick Brown, DL, Auburn

#10 Browns – Jedrick Wills, OL, Alabama

While there’s no way the 2020 NFL Draft plays out this way, the Dolphins and Chargers would likely be thrilled to land potential franchise signal-callers without having to trade up to get them.
