Several college football programs are already looking for new coaches, and on Monday, South Alabama was added to that list.

The Jaguars only started playing football back in 2009, and Joey Jones had been the only head coach in program history. However, on Monday, he announced he was resigning from his post.

According to a release from USAJaguars.com, Jones said he felt like now was the time to walk away from the program he built, saying it needs a change:

“There comes a time in every program where there is a need for change.  For this program that I love so much, that time is now,” Jones said.  “One of the proudest days of my professional life was being named the first head coach at South Alabama.  Today is difficult, but it is the right step for me, my family and for this football program.”

Jones led the Jaguars to an upset win over Mississippi State last year, but South Alabama is only 4-7 so far this season.

In nine years with the Jaguars, Jones was 52-49 with two bowl appearances (both losses). He’ll stay on as coach through the end of the regular season this week.
