Florida had one of its more winning impressive streaks snapped last season by Tennessee, and Kentucky Sports Radio host and founder Matt Jones thinks another Gators winning streak will end in 2017.

Jones made his bold prediction on Monday’s edition of “The Paul Finebaum Show.”

The Gators have the longest winning streak in an active series in the FBS with 30 consecutive wins over the Wildcats. The longest winning streak in college football belongs to Notre Dame over Navy at 43 games, though the last win for the Irish came in 2006. The Gators will move into a tie with Penn State (31 wins over Temple) if they beat the Wildcats in Week 4.

There have been close calls in the series, most notably in 2014, when many felt delay of game should have been called before a game-tying touchdown in overtime. The following year, the game came down to the final possession with UF winning 14-9.

Last year’s contest resulted in a blowout win for Florida at home, 45-7, to extend the streak to 30. This year’s Gators, however, have to replace eight starters on defense. UF may also be starting a new quarterback.

Luke Del Rio, who had the game of his career against Kentucky last season, missed the end of last season and this spring due to shoulder injuries. Redshirt freshman quarterback Feleipe Franks is the current leader in the competition for the starting job, but there is established mutual interest between the Gators and Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire.

With Kentucky RB Benny Snell coming off a 1,000-yard freshman season and a solid offensive line to block for him, there’s reason for Jones, an unabashed UK homer, to be optimistic about the Wildcats’ chances in 2017. Kentucky also returns solid talent in its secondary and linebacking corps, which should boost the defense next year.

Come Sept. 23, Jones will either look like a genius, or he will be hearing from Florida fans on Twitter.
