ESPN’s College GameDay will be on hand in Columbus, Ohio this week as Ohio State plays host to Penn State.

The show and pregame buildup to the game will no doubt focus on Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, one of the most exciting players in the country. But ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit answered a question on Twitter that he believes a “good performance” from Barkley would effectively end the Heisman Trophy discussion.

Throughout the season, Barkey’s been mentioned among the contenders for the trophy along with reigning Heisman winner Lamar Jackson, a quarterback at Louisville, Stanford running back Bryce Love, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Barkley had a big game against Michigan last week, and now has 1,478 all-purpose yards, which leads the country, with eight rushing touchdowns. Against Michigan, in a 42-13 victory, Barkley got started early with a direct snap on the second play of the game for a 69-yard touchdown. Per game, Barkley averages 211.1 yards, thanks to his 273 kick-return yards.

Penn State is ranked No. 2 and a College Football Playoff contender, and as long as the Nittany Lions keep winning behind big games from Barkley, his name will lead the Heisman conversation.

If Penn State and Barkley slips this week, and the Buckeyes are fueled by a big performance from Barrett, Herbstreit also believes Barrett could get back in contention following the earlier loss to Oklahoma.
