When Tom Herman left Houston to take over at Texas, arguably the best Group of 5 job in the country was left open. With a rich tradition of recent success, powerful boosters fully capable and willing to support the program and the opportunity to mine some of the best talent in the state of Texas, many intriguing candidates are interested in coaching the Cougars.

Chief among them, former LSU head coach Les Miles and current Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. Kiffin reportedly interviewed for the job over the weekend, while Miles has been linked to the job for some time now.

So who is more likely to land the job?

According to BookMaker.eu, Miles has far better odds (+115) over Kiffin (+500) despite recent reports to the contrary. Other contenders for the job include Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley (+250), Houston defensive coordinator Todd Orlando (+2500) and Houston offensive coordinator Major Applewhite (+2500).

If the decision is indeed down to two, Houston may have a tough choice on its hands. Miles had a great deal of sustained success at LSU and recruited east Texas well during his time with the Tigers. On the other hand, Kiffin is viewed by many as the best offensive coordinator in college football and is also known for his ability to land elite talent on the recruiting trail.

One thing to consider, Houston may also be growing weary of having to replace its coach every few seasons. If Kiffin were to be hired, it seems unlikely he would stay in Houston for long. Miles may be able to do LSU one last favor and land the job, likely leading to Kiffin taking the open offensive coordinator position in Baton Rouge.
