Miami lost a key assistant this week when defensive coordinator Manny Diaz left to take the head coach job at Temple.

The fallout has already reached the Hurricanes current and future recruiting classes as they’ve suffered four de-commitments from defensive players, including three who play in the secondary.

The Hurricanes de-commits came from 2019 3-star LB Sam Brooks, Jarvis Brownlee, a 3-star cornerback in 2019, Keshawn Washington, a 4-star safety in the 2020 class, and Jaiden Francois, a 3-star safety in 2020.

Diaz is well-regarded in the coaching community, and the Miami native has been on coach Mark Richt’s staff since 2016. He previously was defensive coordinator at several schools, including Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Texas and Middle Tennessee State.

Miami ended the season on a four-game losing streak and finished 7-5. But the defense received a host of high marks, including being ranked No. 2 in the nation in total defense, and the nation’s top-rated passing defense.

The de-commits dropped Miami down one spot to sixth in the ACC, as the Canes now have 13 commits. Miami is ranked No. 32 in the nation, according to 247 Sports.
