Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has no issue speaking his mind, but his latest suggestion is a bit of a stretch.

Harbaugh addressed the media Thursday as Michigan is getting set to take on South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. While the Wolverines are focused on taking on the Gamecocks come New Year’s Day, questions about the College Football Playoff came up in the press conference.

When discussing the Playoff, Harbaugh said that he would like to see an expansion to include 16 teams in the Playoff. Such an expansion seems unlikely and definitely presents a number of issues in terms of planning and scheduling.

Reporter Joey Knight shared Harbaugh’s comments:

What makes Harbaugh’s comments even better is the fact that Michigan still would not have qualified for the Playoff this season if 16 teams had made it. At 8-4, the Wolverines remain unranked and would still have been way outside looking in at the Playoff.

Adding more irony to Harbaugh’s idea, the final Playoff team and biggest benefactor of this expansion idea would have been Michigan State. The in-state rival of Michigan is currently ranked No. 16 after a nine-win season under Mark Dantonio and would have made a revised, 16-team Playoff.
