Earlier this week, Reddit user Bakonydraco made a startling discovery, revealing a case for why Florida State should not be bowl-eligible this year.

The Seminoles, of course, are scheduled to play Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl, but the Reddit user pointed out that a win against Delaware State shouldn’t have counted toward bowl eligibility due to FCS scholarship numbers.

However, after FSU did some digging, the university released a statement saying that Delaware State was indeed issuing an acceptable amount of scholarships and the victory should count after all:

To their credit, Bakonydraco responded to the statement from Florida State, saying they were glad the Seminoles looked deeper into the matter and proved him wrong, adding that they have no personal bias against FSU:

If they have indeed done their due diligence, and discovered numbers that weren’t available to Delaware State about Delaware State at time of writing yesterday that confirm Florida State’s bowl eligibility, then I’m very happy for them. I don’t have any personal motivation towards or against Florida State, and I think all who followed this process would agree that the regulations around it are certainly complex. If the only thing that comes out of this is that the rules are streamlined and more attention is paid to them, then I’m happy having played a small role in the process.

Worrying about whether a win against Delaware State would count for bowl eligibility certainly isn’t where FSU thought it would be this year, but that’s what happens when you lose your star quarterback for the year.

The Seminoles will play in the Independence Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 27. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time and can be seen on ESPN.
