Now that we’ve seen three weeks of SEC football and are heading into a fourth it gets easy to truly judge the coaches, players and teams we’ve been watching and wondering about for months now. Here’s a look at a few things that are overrated and underrated heading into Week 4.

OVERRATED

ALABAMA’S LOSS — Oh, it’s tempting to declare the dynasty over and start looking for a new king of the SEC to crown. But remember that Alabama lost to Ole Miss last year and still made the College Football Playoff. And Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech last September and won the whole thing. Truth is, if the Crimson Tide finishes the season with just one close loss to an Ole Miss team that will spend a large chunk of the season ranked in the Top 10, then the Tide will be just fine. Let’s revisit the topic in a few weeks after Alabama makes its trip to Georgia.

ARKANSAS — Right now, it’s hard to believe we were all so high on this Razorbacks team. Injuries certainly haven’t helped, but it was like we all forgot Arkansas was a team that struggled to get to .500 and won just two SEC games last year. The Razorbacks’ next four games are vs. Texas A&M, at Tennessee, at Alabama and vs. Auburn. It could get really ugly before there’s any sign of relief.

MISSOURI’S OFFENSE — We knew there were some serious question marks at wide receiver and Maty Mauk could be inconsistent at quarterback, but it was hard to guess that the Tigers would be so inept moving the ball if star running back Russell Hansbrough wasn’t healthy. Mizzou hasn’t been able to find a suitable backup for Hansbrough and only managed one touchdown against a mediocre UConn team. It has to get better with SEC play beginning this week.

UNDERRATED

MISSOURI’S DEFENSE — It’s not getting a ton of praise because the Tigers haven’t played a super tough schedule so far, but Mizzou would not be 3-0 without some outstanding play on defense. Kentrell Brothers is a tackling machine and everyone knows it, but he’s got plenty of help coming from the likes of cornerback Kenya Dennis and freshman defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. They’ll face a tough challenge trying to slow Kentucky’s running game enough to give their own offense a chance.

TRAE ELSTON — Chad Kelly and his “Chad Swag” are getting all the attention at Ole Miss, and if there’s any praise leftover it seems to be thrown at Robert Nkemdiche, but Elston is having as good a season as anyone in the country. He’s got three interceptions in three games and returned two of them for a touchdown. He’s playing like a superstar and not getting enough attention for it.

SEC EAST — So much focus has been on the West Division and its depth and domination, but perhaps the East has taken major steps to catching up this season. Vanderbilt and South Carolina are unimpressive at the bottom of the conference, but Florida and Kentucky continue to improve as programs. People jumped off the Tennessee bandwagon after the collapse against Oklahoma, but the Sooners are a good team. And if Greyson Lambert continues to be effective at quarterback, then Georgia has as good a shot at winning the conference as anyone.
