Well that was a lot of fun. Another regular season is in the books and we’re looking at an Alabama-Florida matchup in Atlanta to determine the SEC title and find out where the conference fits into the College Football Playoff.

With 12 regular season games played by nearly everyone, we’ve figured out a lot and gotten an idea what teams, players and things are overrated and which ones are underrated.

OVERRATED

STAR QUARTERBACKS — They call it the most important position on the field and we’re not saying anybody should turn down having a Dak Prescott or Brandon Allen taking snaps. But there are four teams in the SEC with at least nine wins and a shot for double-digit victories after the bowl season. The leading passers on those four teams are Jake Coker, Treon Harris, Chad Kelly and Greyson Lambert. Kelly put up some significant numbers, but overall that’s not exactly a murderers’ row of great QBs. What they do is control the game without many mistakes and allow the talent around them to carry the team.

LES MILES’ DEMISE — Les Miles is not only still LSU’s coach, he’s somehow become the unofficial King of Louisiana while the LSU administration is scrambling to save face. It turns out being likable and a lot more games than you lose is a good way to keep a coaching job. Who knew?

WHAT IF’S — What if Ole Miss had beaten Arkansas? What if the Rebels hadn’t pulled off a fluke play against Alabama. What if Will Grier was still playing for Florida? What if LSU had lost to Texas A&M? What if Mississippi State had made one more field goal against LSU?  There were plenty of close calls that could have impacted the final results on the season, but in the end we have Alabama and Florida as division winners and nothing can change that. Spending energy on alternative histories is an exercise in futility.

UNDERRATED

THE “OTHER” JOBS — Georgia looks like the premier coaching vacancy in the SEC, perhaps even the entire country, but is tradition everything? If a coach is considering a job smart to consider places where consistently producing a winning record makes you a hero? Missouri and South Carolina have infrastructure in place and reasonable expectations. Shouldn’t that make these “lower tier” SEC jobs awfully desirable?

SONY MICHEL — Speaking of Georgia, with all the turmoil it’s easy not to notice that after Nick Chubb went down with an injury, Michel did an outstanding job taking over the primary running back job for the Bulldogs. The sophomore from Plantation, Fla., finished the regular season with 1,076 rushing yards and averaged 5.4 yards per carry. Whomever gets the Florida job is inheriting a terrific running game.

BRANDON ALLEN — Yeah, we know what we wrote about quarterbacks up above, but does anybody north of the Mason-Dixon Line or west of the Rockies realize just how good the Arkansas quarterback has been this year? The season could have been a total disaster for the the Razorbacks after a rough start, but Allen carried Arkansas to a winning record with 3,125 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.
