With only Week 5 completed, the 2018 college football season is less than half-way completed. That’s not stopping those in the media from making College Football Playoff predictions based on what we’ve seen so far.

Appearing on ESPN’s “Get Up” morning show Wednesday, Paul Finebaum identified his current CFP four as:

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Georgia
  4. Notre Dame

When the CFP first launched for the 2014 season, the question was which conference would be the odd man out as the expectation was that teams from four of the Power 5 conferences would fill the available slots. If Finebaum’s prediction comes true, the ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 will all be on the outside looking in this time around.

Considering Clemson, Oklahoma and Notre Dame are all currently undefeated, it is somewhat surprising to see Finebaum still sees two SEC teams making the field. Some may lump Notre Dame in with the ACC as the Fighting Irish play five ACC teams (but also face two Big Ten teams, two Pac-12 teams and an SEC team).

The first CFP selection committee poll reveal is just under four weeks away (Oct. 30). The final poll will not come out until after the conference championship games are played in early December. There will clearly be lots to debate in the meantime if Finebaum’s four teams (and others) are all looking strong.
