Week 13 is what it is — Big Ten teams call it “Rutgers Week.”

Still, there is intrigue to be found, as long as you know where to look.

Here are the 6 biggest storylines I’ll be following today in (and mostly around) the SEC.

1. Can Penn State turn the entire Playoff race upside down?

Watching Ohio State and Penn State this season, there is absolutely nothing to suggest today’s game should be close.

Ohio State’s offense is far more versatile and explosive. Its defense is better across the board and gets its best player back, too. (Let’s hope Chase Young isn’t rusty after that anguishing 2-game suspension.)

I’m fully expecting Justin Fields to enjoy his 2nd career 300-yard day. (He threw for 305 last week against … Rutgers.)

The game is in Columbus, too. Everything shouts Ohio State 42, Penn State 17.

But these games are rarely blowouts. The past 3 have been decided by 1 point, 1 point and 3 points, respectively.

I love chaos, and nothing would be more chaotic than Penn State beating Ohio State to all but wrap up the Big Ten East, you know, assuming the Nittany Lions could hold off … Rutgers next week.

It’s probably wishful thinking, though.

2. Let it fly, Mac

Not wanting to add insult to injury, the Playoff selection committee gave Alabama a pass this week, keeping the Tide at No. 5 even though Alabama isn’t close to being the same team it was.

Mac Jones is in a tough spot today. Even if he throws for 300 yards and 4 TDs — child’s play for Tua Tagovailoa against a team like Western Carolina — skeptics will quickly note it was against Western Carolina.

The real danger though is … what if he doesn’t have that kind of day? There won’t be much need to wait until the Auburn game if Jones doesn’t have a big day … or if Alabama runs it 45 times for 280 yards and only throws it 20.

Everybody is questioning Alabama. Alabama needs to send a message, through the air, that Mac Jones can play this game a little bit, too, and that those 4 wideouts are still the most dangerous in the country.

3. Can Jayden Daniels wreck Oregon’s Playoff hopes?

I doubt you’ve paid much attention to Arizona State or its QB, Jayden Daniels. The Sun Devils are 5-5, a fringe bowl team that has lost 4 in a row. Yet even during that slide, Daniels has given them a chance.

Daniels was the No. 3-rated QB in the 2019 class. He’s from the Los Angeles area, so SEC schools weren’t really in play even though he received several offers and even took an unofficial visit to Florida. All 5 of his official visits were to Pac-12 schools.

Rated No. 35 overall, he just missed being a 5-star recruit. He has outperformed both QBs ahead of him (Spencer Rattler is redshirting at Oklahoma, and Bo Nix has struggled at Auburn).

In his past 4 games, he has topped 300 yards twice and thrown 3 TDs 3 times. The blip? A 4-for-18 goose egg against Utah.

Can he atone? It’s doubtful, but it’s worth watching tonight to find out.

4. Can the Vols keep it going?

Momentum and confidence are almost as important as recruiting. Whatever talent deficiency Tennessee might lack, the Vols have more than made up for with intangibles during their late-season 180. They can secure a bowl bid with a win tonight at Missouri.

Conversely, it’s difficult to guage where Mizzou is. Have the Tigers mailed it in? Will sneaking into a bowl — and perhaps finding out, finally, that they’re eligible for a bowl — be enough motivation to keep going?

Mizzou plays better at home than on the road and it’s senior night. Maybe that’ll inspire the Tigers. Barry Odom has rallied the troops before. At some point, though, the motivation has to be internal. I haven’t sensed a very motivated squad recently.

5. I want to see Jake Fromm take over late in a game

I wrote this in another piece this week, but it’s worth repeating.

Georgia didn’t lose twice to Alabama because of its defense. It lost the National Championship Game in 2017 and SEC title game last year because it couldn’t score when it mattered most. In each instance, the Bulldogs scored just 1 TD after halftime.

The same thing nearly bit the Bulldogs in the rear end last week, too. Needing 1 score to put away Auburn, Georgia punted 3 consecutive times after taking a 21-0 lead. All 3 possessions were 3-and-out and netted a total of 1 yard. Auburn scored 2 TDs and who knows what happens if Auburn recovers that onside kick.

Against Florida, the Dawgs held on but scored only 1 TD after halftime.

It’s a recurring issue that suggests the Dawgs’ young playmakers are feeling the stress of late-game situations.

I don’t feel overly confident that Texas A&M can put Georgia in that kind of situation, but if it’s a 1-score game in the 3rd quarter, Jake Fromm can ease a lot of anxiety by putting up a 14-point 4th quarter.

6. It’s been quiet on the upset front. Can that change today?

Per usual, the regular season has been marked by upsets.

There haven’t been many lately. That’s a key reason the top 10 teams in the Playoff rankings didn’t change this week. And nobody in the top 10 of the initial ranking 3 weeks ago fell out because it lost to an unranked team.

Since Oklahoma’s loss to unranked Kansas State on Oct. 26, we haven’t seen a notable upset.

We’re due.

Who’s it going to be?
