It’s impossible to predict what will happen next year.

Each offseason, college football programs have high hopes heading into a new season.

But we saw it this year more than ever. Things happen. Great coaches leave, get fired or retire.

It’s just the nature of the business.

Here are a few potential jobs that could open around the country after 2016:

Texas A&M head coaching job: The public still don’t know what happened in College Station this season. But by the end of the year, both Kyler Murray and Kyle Allen decided to transfer. It seems like former Aggies athletic director Eric Hyman took the brunt of the criticism this season. But if Kevin Sumlin doesn’t turn things around in 2016, this could be an open job.

Auburn head coaching job: It isn’t likely that Gus Malzahn will have another bad year at Auburn. It just doesn’t seen right. Even by the end of 2015, it looked like the Tigers were starting to play better.  The win over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl should help spark momentum. But Malzahn’s name has already been mentioned among coaches that may be on the hot seat. He could be in trouble if Auburn isn’t improved next year.

Texas head coaching job: It’s uncertain whether Charlie Strong is the right fit at Texas. The Longhorns finished 5-7 in a tough Big-12. Texas has alumni that live and die by Longhorns football. He may be safe for now, but that could quickly change.

Penn State head coaching job: This is another one that may be hard to fathom as of now. But it is safe to say that James Franklin has underachieved since he left Vanderbilt to take over the Nittany Lions. He’s gone 7-6 in both seasons at Penn State. He needs to do better.

Oregon head coaching job: Yes, this is a stretch. But is anything really that far fetched in our current college football landscape? Oregon was accustomed to being the class of the Pac-12 under Chip Kelly. Mark Helfrich went an impressive 26-4 in his first two seasons. But this year, the Ducks finished 9-4, which isn’t good enough. Helfrich is safe right now, but he better get Oregon back on track.

The Stanford head coaching job: David Shaw’s name repeatedly emerges for other positions, particularly in the NFL. Stanford has a talented roster heading into 2016. The Cardinal could make a run for the College Football Playoff. If it does, Shaw could want to make another move after putting together a memorable year.

Alabama offensive coordinator position: Lane Kiffin has revived his career in Tuscaloosa. He has committed to Alabama OC another year. If Kiffin gets a head coaching gig, the Alabama offensive coordinator position opens up.
