There has been nonstop debate in the college football mediasphere about Cincinnati’s place in the recently-released College Football Playoff top 25 rankings. The 8-0 Bearcats, ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, were slotted at No. 6 in the first Playoff rankings of the season. That they found themselves behind a pair of 1-loss teams from the Power 5 ranks—No. 2 Alabama and No. 4 Oregon—made for plenty of debate.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit said Tuesday night that Cincinnati would need to not only watch who was in front of them but also who was behind them, with a still-very-much-in-the-hunt Michigan team at No. 7 and a 9-0 Oklahoma team sitting at No. 8. The Wolverines still have a path to a Big Ten title game and the Sooners have the meat of their schedule upcoming.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Rece Davis added that Cincinnati does still have something working in its favor, though: this has been a season of upsets in college football.

“The best thing they have going for them is the fact there has been so much upheaval, that there have been so many ranked teams lose to unranked opponents,” Davis said. “The fact that they have 2 teams in front of them that if they stumble again they’re done—Alabama and Ohio State.”

Three top-10 teams lost last weekend alone, with No. 6 Michigan falling to No. 8 Michigan State, No. 9 Iowa losing to unranked Wisconsin, and No. 10 Ole Miss losing to No. 18 Auburn. In total this season, 10 teams ranked inside the top 10 have lost to unranked opponents through 9 weeks.

Ahead of the Bearcats in the CFP rankings are No. 1 Georgia (8-0), No. 2 Alabama (7-1), No. 3 Michigan State (8-0), No. 4 Oregon (7-1), and No. 5 Ohio State (7-1). The Bearcats will surely be looking for some style points to help their cause when they play Tulsa (3-5) this weekend at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
